Men’s Health Month

The focus is on men this month, with both Men’s Health Month and Father’s Day falling in June.  The purpose of a dedicated month is to raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This year’s theme — “Partners in Care: For Better Lifespans Across the Lifespan” —highlights the role that families, communities, and care partners play in supporting healthier outcomes for men.

Getting recommended screenings is one of the most important actions men can take for their health. Depending on age and medical history, screenings might include checking for certain types of cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and mental health conditions, such as depression and PTSD. Here are some tips for Dads…and all guys.

Great Outdoors Month

Since 1998, June has been designated as Great Outdoors Month, a celebration of outdoor recreation and America’s parks, wildlife refuges, forests, monuments, marine sanctuaries, waters, national conservation lands, and other natural treasures. Here are some related resources and events:

Pride Month

Pride Month  is celebrated globally every June to recognize and celebrate LGBTQ+ people, and to acknowledge their continuing struggle for equality. It is a joyous time, marked by parades, celebrations, and various events. For links to more resources, including work-related resources, see our blog post about LGBTQ+ Pride Month at Work

PTSD Awareness Month

PTSD Awareness Month shines a light on post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition that can affect anyone after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Although PTSD is often linked to military service, it can also result from accidents, violence, abuse, serious illness, natural disasters, or other deeply distressing experiences. Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, emotional numbness, trouble concentrating, or feeling constantly alert and unsafe. While many people recover naturally over time, others may continue to struggle and benefit from professional support. Nearly 12 million Americans experience PTSD in a given year, yet many never seek help. Awareness matters because PTSD is real, common, and treatable. If you recognize these symptoms in yourself or someone you care about, a simple online PTSD self-screening may help determine whether additional support could be beneficial.

Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease, the most common form of dementia and the fact that some dementia-like symptoms may be treatable. Drug interactions, thyroid issues, vitamin deficiencies, and depression can all mimic memory loss, which is why a doctor’s evaluation matters. The encouraging news: even with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s, lifestyle choices make a real difference. Regular exercise, a healthy diet (especially foods rich in omega-3s), managing conditions like diabetes, reducing stress, and staying socially and mentally engaged have all been shown to lower risk. The Alzheimer’s Research Association offers solid guidance on what’s normal aging, what’s not, and when to seek help. ESI EAP members can log-in to www.theEAP.com to access a variety of Aging and Elder Care resources, from eldercare locators and caregiver resources to later-life planning tools.
