National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is “Savor the flavor of eating right.” At eatingright.org, you can get tips sheets and handouts, web widgets and a social media toolkit. They’ve put together some really fun social media tools, including messages, gifs, memes and backgrounds in English and Spanish. Use them with your staff!

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects people in all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people age 50 and older.

The good news? If everyone age 50 and older were screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to encourage people to get screened.

You can find more about activities and awareness information at information about Colon Cancer Awareness Month from the Colon Cancer Alliance.

National Kidney Month

According to the National Institute of Health, “Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure. Almost half of people starting dialysis have kidney failure caused by diabetes. Diabetes can damage your kidneys. This damage can happen over many years, without you feeling it. But, even if you have diabetes, you can take steps to help keep your kidneys healthy.”

In addition to diabetes, other major risk factors for kidney disease include high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and family history of kidney failure. Additional risk factors include obesity, autoimmune diseases, urinary tract infections, systemic infections, and kidney loss, damage, injury or infection.

Problem Gambling Awareness Month

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) encourages everyone to “Have the Conversation about Problem Gambling.” They say that most adults gamble or know someone who gambles, and therefore could benefit from programs to prevent gambling addiction. We believe many who suffer in silence do so because they don’t know why they developed a problem, what gambling addiction is or where to get help.

The site offers an extensive list of resources, fact sheets and information about problem gambling.

Red Cross Month

Every eight minutes, the American Red Cross brings help and hope to people in need. Red Cross says that, “We use this month as a chance to honor and celebrate the everyday heroes who help us fulfill our mission. This March, we encourage you to uncover your inner hero.” At their site, you can learn ways to donate, give blood, volunteer or take a class. There are many training opportunities ranging from CPR and First Aid to Lifeguarding/Water Safety to Babysittng/Childcare.
