Drug Free Workplace and D.O.T. Compliance Program

The Drug Free Workplace Act requires employers who conduct $25,000 or more in business with the federal government to provide a drug free workplace environment. The key compliance issues include creating a Drug Free Workplace policy, conducting drug and alcohol awareness training, as well as offering treatment options for employees abusing drugs in the workplace. For clients needing assistance, EAP consultants guide and assist in the development of a comprehensive program.

The Omnibus Transportation Testing Act mandates alcohol and drug testing of safety-sensitive employees in the transportation and pipeline industries. For over a decade, we have been a leader in developing Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) compliance programs. And now this entire program is available to client organizations via the Internet. By simply logging-on and entering the appropriate password, employers have access to up-to-date policies and procedures. There are links to all the necessary resources including drug testing sites and Substance Abuse Professionals, (SAPs). In addition, we include the on-line training programs needed to assure that managers and supervisors meet the federal training requirements.
Consider these statistics:
  • Alcohol and drug abuse cost the nation $246 billion annually, or nearly $1000 each for every man, woman and child.
  • Substance abuse problems cost American business an estimated $81 billion in lost production.
  • Up to 40% of industrial fatalities and nearly half of all industrial injuries can be linked to substance abuse.
  • One in five workers report that they have had to work harder, redo work, cover for a co-worker or have been put in danger or injured as a result a fellow employee’s drinking.
  • Substance abuse is estimated to cause 500 million lost workdays annually.
Drug-using employees take three times as many sick benefits as other workers. They are five times more likely to file a worker's compensation claim.
Becoming certified as a Drug Free Workplace can help you create a happier, safer and more productive work environment. It sends a positive message to your workforce, to your new hires, to your employees’ families, to your clients and to your community.
As part of our Employer Compliance Services, we can help to guide you through the certification process and establish the program that is right for your company.

Our services include:

  • Conducting prevention and awareness programs for your employees.
  • Training your supervisors in substance abuse issues and their role in a drug free workplace.
  • Providing treatment alternatives for any of your employees with substance abuse problems.
  • Securing approved drug-testing services for both employers who are mandated to have such programs and any other employers who are interested in such services.
