Buckle up those traveling pets!

Bark Buckle UP is a national pet safety program which focuses on the safety of traveling pets. Because most animals travel unrestrained, the corresponding risk to vehicle occupants, pets and first responders called to an accident site is of growing concern. If an accident occurs, the pet is at risk of injury. Plus, when a first responder is called to the scene of the accident, an injured, traumatized or frightened pet can pose a challenge. Securing the pet often needs to be dealt with before rendering aid to people – and this can result in the loss of precious time.

Bark  Buckle UP says:

“It only takes a few minutes to safeguard your pet’s safety by buckling them up. Accidents do happen, and you owe it to your pet to protect them against possible injury. Unleashing this life saving message through Bark Buckle UP will increase the number of pets traveling safely and will save lives. When driving 35 mph, a 60-pound unrestrained dog can cause an impact of 2,700 pounds, slamming into a car seat, windshield, or passenger.

Even if the animal survives, it can impede the progress of rescue workers who need every moment possible to safely care for accident victims. Pet restraints in moving vehicles are now required in many states and provinces since they offer several advantages – they help protect pets in the event of a collision; keep pets from running loose and distracting the driver; and prevent pets from escaping the car through an open window or door.”

On an ongoing basis, Bark Buckle UP collects and stores in-depth statistics about pet safety and uses compiled data to educate pet owners and to improve the laws for pet safety. The site offers advice and many tools for various types of pet travel, from  autos to airlines. Don’t miss their pet safety products page.

Training with the Dog Guy: More On Taking Back The Pack Leader Role

By: Steve Phillips, Master Trainer
.

In a previous article we discussed the importance of the feeding routine in showing your dog that you are the “pack leader” in your household in a way that your dog can understand.  It is imperative that all human members of the pack treat the dog in a way that shows they are dominant over the dog with out resorting to violence.  Many people try to control their dog by being physically dominant rather than being an example to the dog and showing the dog they are dominant by how the dog is treated in the household.

One technique that was published in a very popular book back in the 1970s is called the “puppy rollover.”  The premise is that when a young puppy is doing something that is unacceptable; you say “NO” then forcible roll the puppy on to its back and hold it on its back until the puppy submits. The idea is that you are simulating how the puppy’s mother would act to get respect and to stop the unwanted action. – she would growl and roll the puppy over on its back until it submitted.  Through repetition, the puppy learns that when the mother growls a certain way, the puppy better stop whatever action has caught the mother’s attention.  For puppies under twelve weeks of age, this might be an acceptable method.  Unfortunately, many people try to do the “puppy rollover” with dogs that are eight months old and more. For some people, this is the first thing they do to try to control their dog.

Driving with pets on your lap: soon to be illegal in California

It looks like the practice of driving with pets on your lap in California may soon be illegal, resulting in a $35 fine. Some pet owners aren’t happy about this, but when it comes to both driving safety and pet safety, having pets on your lap while driving is not a good idea. In fact, the whole idea of loose pets in vehicles can be a problem. If you brake quickly or are in an accident, your pets become projectiles that can injure them and injure any people that they hit. The Pet Travel Center has a good article on best practices for driving with pets in the car – it’s worth checking out. Another good resource is Bark Buckle Up by pet travel safety advocate Christina Selter.
