Friday Fun: Teddy the talking porcupine

Usually, we feature posts about house pets, but every now and again, we like to venture further afield. Today, we have a couple of clips from a hilarious talking porcupine named Teddy. These are posted by Zooniversity, a wildlife education company and exotic animal rescue located in Dallas, Texas.

Is it too early for our awkward Christmas gift?

Well, we just spotted our favorite silly holiday gift of the year: Awkward Family Pet Photos, the book. The book comes after the site, and according to the article, “Childhood friends Mike Bender and Doug Chernack launched Awkward Family Photos after Mike noticed an awkward vacation photo hung in his parents’ house. They figured there were probably plenty of other people out there with their own awkward family images, and the two friends decided to create a friendly place where everyone could come together and share their uncomfortable family moments. Now their site receives millions of hits and they’ve released two books: Awkward Family Photos and Awkward Family Pet Photos.”

The SFGate article includes a photo gallery, plus you can also view photos here. The Awkward Family Pet Photos website is here.

Of course, do keep in mind that we aren’t laughing at ourselves, we’re laughing with ourselves, because dog knows we have some truly goofy family pet photos of our own in the ol’ awkward family album.

What doo doggies doo on Halloween?

A word to the wise: be careful how you treat — or don’t treat — canny costumed canines craving candy this Halloween; watch and learn:

2009…

2010…

Hmmm. What will this intrepid duo doo this year, I wonder? You can view more videos of Splash, Kiko and pals, including many helpful clicker training exercises, on the Kikopup YouTube channel… and we’ll be checking back to see what sort of spooky shenanigans they pull this year.

AT-AT Dog Day Friday

In the Star Wars universe, “the All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) walker, also known as the Imperial Walker, was a major part of the Galactic Empire’s army.” It is also a perennial favorite of Star Wars merchandise collectors, kids of all ages… and, apparently, dog lovers.

For our Friday Fun, we present 2 K9 AT-AT creations: one dog disguised as an AT-AT, and one AT-AT disguised as a dog…

The Force is Strong in Bones Mello, the Star Wars AT-AT Dog

PHOTO VIA BONES MELLO

View the process of making Bones Mello into an AT-AT on Mashable, or visit Bones on Facebook. Patience, thy name is ‘dog.’ Or at least one very specific, very Mello dog.

Elsewhere, a very patient, and very obsessed, person creates his own version of man’s best friend with an AT-AT toy replica:

The Making-Of video shows how:

And… AT-At-at’s all, folks!

Frightday fun

In the lead-up to Halloween, we couldn’t resist posting a couple of terrifyingly talkative scaredy-cats.

This puffball, it turns out, is utterly horrified at seeing a child for the very first time:

But the most famous frightened feline talking about terrible things must be the little fellow below, who seems chilled and not-so-thrilled with someone named John or Johnson, and another scary guy named “Don Piano.” *Shiver* eek!

Funny, yes, but this sort of vocalization from an otherwise fairly calm cat is usually an expression of intense fear. If your cat is behaving this way, try to determine what might be new or different in the environment, or if there might be a strange animal nearby. If you can’t find any cause for this behavior, time to see the Vet to make sure there is no physical ailment! Seasonal: Cute Kitties Cavort in Leaf Litter

in the photo montage 20 Cats Enjoying Fall Foliage from Buzzfeed, though we have one little nit to pick on the title — there are actually 24 felines frolicking in fall foliage. Go ahead, count ‘em. Details, people!

Superstar Update

The world-famous Maru, much like Madonna (another superstar with a single name), doesn’t rest on his laurels, constantly reinventing himself and pushing the boundaries of his art. Despite the unprecedented success and international acclaim of his many award-winning “Boxvideos, we find Maru experimenting with the Bag genre in this recent video release:

Also of interest, a homo sapiens competitor attempts to snag fame on the coattails of Maru’s signature Box moves. While it at times shows flashes of technical proficiency, we find that this performance just doesn’t have the same je ne sais quoi as the original:

Currently the Number One Dog Video on YouTube,

with over 62 million views, and, coincidentally, one of our all-time favorites… The Ultimate Dog Tease:

the maple kind, yeah?

The #1 kitty video, by the way, is a super blast from the past: The Mean Kitty Song, first posted four years ago, has nearly 57 million views. Now, this tune is true hip hop hop!

*Out* Went the Lady With the Alligator Purse

How many dogs can skip rope together at once? Thirteen adorable pooches, according to the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records.

“As most inventions and discoveries are made, this record setting dog trick happened purely by accident. The dog handler at Uchida Geinousha’s ‘Super Wan Wan Circus’ in Japan said, ‘One day Mayonnaise, an incredibly curious poodle, started to try and skip with us. She clearly really enjoyed it and we decided to get the other dogs involved. It’s become part of their playtime.’”

If you fancy teaching your dog to skip rope, here is a quick tutorial. See also 52 Tricks To Teach Your Dog for more fun times with smart pups.
